Help Wanted!

The NSWHL needs volunteers to help run our awesome hockey league. We need help with stats, scheduling, finances, organizing playoffs etc. This year we had a team of 10 people running our 19 team league. Next year, it looks like there will be at least 22, but maybe as many as 24 teams in the league. That's a lot of stats and a lot of games to schedule. Please consider stepping forward and giving some of your spare time to be a part of our successful and growing league. Send an email by May 1st: info@nswhl.ca

Final Playoff Schedules

Final Playoff schedules. All files open as PDFs.

B1 Division
B2 Division
C Division
Regular season final standings will determine seeding.

NSWHL playoff rules are:

A winner must be decided in each game. Ties will be broken by a five minute OT Period, then a shootout if still tied. This is a double elimination tournament, except if the championship game is first loss.

Tie breaking rules:
If teams are tied at the end of regular play, the teams shall have a 2 minute rest at their respective benches and a 5 minute sudden death period shall be played.
If still tied, each team will choose 3 players for shootout.
Home team chooses to shoot first or second. The home team is always the team ranked higher in regular season play.

If still tied after 3 shooters then each team will choose another shooter until a winner is declared. (One for one, sudden death.)

Each team has to use a different shooter until the team with the least amount of players in the game has gone through their entire shooter roster then both can revert back to choosing a same shooter.

On-site League contact: (cell) 221-7656. These rules will be on the programs given out at the tournament.

Formation Halifax Mariners win Military Nationals

This photo was taken in Ontario right after the Formation Halifax Mariners won the Military Nationals. Mariners were Team Atlantic and played four other Regions: Pacific / Prairie Provinces / Ontario & Quebec. They went through the round robin with 3 wins & one tie. The one tie was against Team Quebec with a 1-1 score; out shooting them 31-8. Then they faced Team Pacific in the Semi's & easily defeated them 9-0, with Quebec beating Ontario 5-3 in the other game this meant they had to play once again Quebec in the final match. Mariners were simply too strong for Quebec in that final game soundly defeating them 6-1 and once again bringing home the Gold & the National Title once again. They placed four players in the All-Star Team / Dawn MacAuley / Kirsten Lindstol / Brigitte Delisle & Heather Gillespy. It was a great experience playing Teams at the National level and it proves that our Nova Scotia Women's Hockey League is instrumental in the development of players of all levels and prepares them for competitions of this level.

Summer hockey?

We are getting several e-mails from players looking for summer ice hockey. The NSWHL operates from October to April. If anyone is organizing summer hockey - and they are looking for players - please let us know and we can pass it along.

Attention All Senior Women Hockey Players

We are extremely excited to announce the advancement of senior women's hockey to be included this year in a first-ever Hockey Tournament for 50+ year-olds (birth date by the end of 2011), along with the other sporting games being played, which is put on by the "Nova Scotia 55+ Games Society." read more

Playoff schedule changes coming

There will be a few minor tweaks to the times on the playoff schedule (due to the arena's flooding schedule). They will be updated shortly.

Good news

NSWHLers came out in support of the SMU hockey program. Here's a pic of some league folks at the rally at SMU. It looks like the program will be saved thanks in part to a major sponsorship from Canadian Tire! Read the good news here.

SMU Cuts their Women's Hockey Program! Speak up!

Yesterday (Friday March 18th) St. Mary's University (SMU) cut their women's hockey program citing budget cuts. Read about it in the ChronicleHerald. Here, here and here. In Metro News here. Comment on the stories on the newspapers' websites.

Speak up in support of this program and women's hockey!

Email the Athletic's Director and President of SMU to make them aware of your opinion. steve.sarty@smu.ca and colin.dodds@smu.ca.

A respectful note asking them to reconsider their decision and telling them why women's hockey is a valuable part of their athletic programs can make a difference.
